Meal planning for backpacking can be overwhelming for many hikers, me included. Have your backpacking meal options ever left you less than impressed? Here’s the thing, the foods you eat really make a difference in your performance, recovery and mood. Foods rich in flavor and nutrients can really help your body recover. In addition, having a nice meal can turn a rough day into a great one in a hurry. Food is powerful!

Meal planning for backpackers should go beyond ramen, Snickers, tuna packets, Clif Bars and dehydrated meals. While maybe not all bad, there is a LOT of room for improvement. You don’t need to be whiz in the kitchen to crank out tasty backpacking meals. If you can make a box of macaroni and cheese, you can easily upgrade your cuisine while camping. Backpacking meals never tasted so good!

If you’re like me, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start, what to bring, and how much of it to bring. Using a simple 2 pounds per day calculation isn’t a very good plan.
