Meal Planning For Backpacking

Meal planning for backpacking

Meal planning for backpacking can be overwhelming for many hikers, me included. Have your backpacking meal options ever left you less than impressed? Here’s the thing, the foods you eat really make a difference in your performance, recovery and mood. Foods rich in flavor and nutrients can really help your body recover. In addition, having a nice meal can turn a rough day into a great one in a hurry. Food is powerful!

Meal planning for backpackers should go beyond ramen, Snickers, tuna packets, Clif Bars and dehydrated meals. While maybe not all bad, there is a LOT of room for improvement. You don’t need to be whiz in the kitchen to crank out tasty backpacking meals. If you can make a box of macaroni and cheese, you can easily upgrade your cuisine while camping. Backpacking meals never tasted so good!

Where should you start?

If you’re like me, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start, what to bring, and how much of it to bring. Using a simple 2 pounds per day calculation isn’t a very good plan. I mean 2 pounds of oatmeal pies is great in theory but terrible in practice. Since having proper food to fuel my adventures and recovery is a priority, I knew I needed some assistance.

Before I met Aaron, the Backcountry Foodie, my wife and I did the research and bought the books to food prep. Honestly, that approach worked but it wasn’t very streamlined nor as user friendly as I would have hoped. As you can read here in my REI interview, it ultimately worked well, but it could have been easier.

Thankfully, the Backcountry Foodie has solved this otherwise overwhelming task of meal planning for backpackers. Aaron is now offering a pretty fantastic recipe service for her delicious creations! If you are vegan or vegetarian, gluten free, nut free or prefer to cold soak your food, she’s got piles of recipes to delight your senses. The best part? They come right to your inbox.

Her super affordable plan is so cheap, you can’t afford to NOT sign up. Seriously, it’s only $59.99 per year! She even offers a 30 day money back guarantee.
