Lunges are a great exercise for hikers and they are often skipped. Tip: if you hate an exercise, it may be a really good one for you!

If lunges make your really sore, do less and do them more often. They help immensely with downhill hiking and keeping knees happy and healthy. Today, I did 250 with a 20lb weight vest.

I finished today with deadlifts. These are another great exercise for hikers! I like them for hip and leg strength along with hitting the back and core muscles.

For hikers, I like 10-15 reps for 3-4 sets at a weight that allows you to do those numbers. I did 5 sets of 5 today at 315lbs, but I'm NOT currently training for a long distance hike. If you are training for a hike, your sets and reps should be higher than 5 sets of 5!

Lunges are a great way to train for downhill hiking because of how the quads need to absorb and control the lunge motion. Leg muscle mass also helps stave off arthritis and helps you live longer. What's not to love?

Today, I'm doing 200 with a 20lb vest. Do them in reverse or onto a short step if your knees protest. Finish with 5-10 minutes of quad stretches and massage.

Set yourself up for success and decrease your risk of injury! You should be training 12-16 weeks BEFORE your start date. That means December and January for you March and April hikers!

I offer online personal training and so does @summitstrength.au, either of us is more than willing to answer questions and share our knowledge.

The lateral step down is a great way to help build strength where you need it for downhill hiking.

There's a few ways to do these:

Start with a short step, mine is 3 inches tall. If you can control the movement and have no pain, that's a free green light to increase the step height.

Hardest: forward heel taps. Tap the heel out front.

Easier: lateral step down. Keep your foot flat; don't let your toes touch the floor first.

Easiest: backward step down. Again, keep a flat foot and don't let your toes touch first.

I like 3 sets of 15, 3-4x per week.
